Two other community discussion sessions planned for the revision of gas prices

Las Cruces Utilities and its Utility Customer Advisory Group will be offering two more community discussion sessions for residents to express their views on the gas tariff review. UCAG, with the help of the public input, informs the LCU Council of Commissioners, which then submits its recommendation to City Council.

Residents have until July 31, 2021 to comment on gas tariff review options, but can attend either of the two meetings in person. The meeting will have a presentation by UCAG based on information provided by Stantec Consulting. This consultant assessed current gas prices, examined revenue requirements and the cost of providing services. Meetings will take place:

  • Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. at LCU 225 Boardroom, 680 N. Motel Blvd
  • Wednesday, July 28, 2021, 5:30 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers, 700 N. Main Street

LCU is a department of the city of Las Cruces but is not funded by taxpayer money. It has been ten years since LCU last revised natural gas prices. The current review of gas tariffs reflects increases in construction, material and supply costs resulting from normal employee turnover and training, wages and benefits, gas system maintenance and maintenance. safety, vehicle and equipment maintenance and replacement compliance, as well as an increase of $ 934,601.00 in new debt for gas development.

The three tariff options considered are:

  1. Full implementation of the new tariffs in one year;
  2. A gradual increase in limited costs for the two categories of customers most affected (small and large salespeople) over three years; or
  3. A complete and gradual increase in costs for all categories of customers over three years.

The facts about the gas tariff revision:

  • LCU needs to increase its overall revenues by $ 2.4 million per year. The last increase in gas prices was in 2011.
  • The average monthly residential gas bill today is $ 26.87, including access charges. An increase in the total cost would drop the average residential bill to $ 29.33.
  • Today, the average small monthly commercial gas bill is $ 75.15 including access charge. An increase in the total cost would drop the average small commercial invoice to $ 107.24.
