The Department of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery of Hamad Medical Corporation, in cooperation with the International Obesity Federation, organized the first national obesity workshop, âChallenges and Strategies for Prevention and Treatmentâ. The workshop brought together a group of obesity experts from Hamad Medical Corporation, primary health care and the private sector, in addition to leaders from the Ministry of Public Health, the World Obesity Federation and experts in obesity from the United Kingdom, Gulf countries and Lebanon. .
The workshop also saw in-depth discussions on national guidelines for the management of obese patients in adults and children, which were recently published on the website of the State Department of Public Health of Qatar and on how best to implement them. The workshop also aimed to present the challenges that healthcare providers face in dealing with overweight patients and obesity complications.
The representative of the Ministry of Health also reviewed the guidelines established by the ministry for the treatment of obesity in adults and children. These guidelines aim to unify obesity treatment plans across various health facilities in the State of Qatar, underscoring the country’s commitment to providing the best safe and effective care in the treatment and prevention of diseases associated with obesity, in accordance with what is stipulated in the national health strategy. .
The workshop also highlighted obesity in children and adolescents due to the increasing number of obesity cases in this age group who are also likely to suffer from health, social and mental problems due to the obesity, which also underlines the importance of the service provided to this age group.
The heads of clinical nutrition from Hamad Medical Corporation participated in the workshop. They reviewed the importance of a healthy and balanced diet and pointed out that the treatment of obesity requires integrated care based on adhering to a healthy and balanced diet, in addition to changing the sedentary lifestyle. and changing unhealthy behavioral habits to include sport and daily physical activity to achieve the best weight.
The workshop distinguished itself by welcoming a number of obese patients to review their therapeutic or surgical journey in weight loss, tell their vision and the challenges they faced during the period of treatment and follow-up. This represents the modern medical trend, taking into account the preferences and needs of the patient when developing a treatment plan.

The number of patient visits seen each year by the bariatric and metabolic surgery department was 14,500, which makes the center one of the largest specialized and quality services.
The workshop highlighted that the State of Qatar was the first in the Gulf and the Arab world to establish the first obesity medicine scholarship training program, which was launched in 2014 under the leadership of Dr Wahiba El Haj, Senior Consultant in Bariatric Medicine at Hamad Medical Corporation. The program currently has nine doctors, which is an important step in making specialist doctors available to fill the void resulting from the scarcity of doctors in this specialty.

The workshop further recommended increasing training programs for health care providers to target obesity as well as launching awareness campaigns in schools to educate children about the risks of obesity.
